He will do two training sessions. Each session will be 2 hours long. The first will be with Gi for Judo and Jiu-jitsu. The second will be No-gi for MMA and submission grappling.

Inside Dynamic MMA--week of July 16-20

Congratulations to Jessee and Danielle on getting married! The wedding was great. I feel like our dojo is reaching maturity when I am able to remember Jessee training with us as a teen and now he is a grown man with a wife.

...other News--Sometime in late August or early September, we will be welcoming Judo Olympian and Bellator lightweight tournament winner, Rick Hawn to our dojo for a seminar. Please start saving a few bucks now, so you are not left out of this opportunity to learn from this outstanding Judo/MMA athlete.

Here is a short video highlight of Rick.

Kodokan Judo

All week

Nage-waza---throws, throws, and more throws. Accuracy is always #1. Speed and power are useless if you cannot hit the target. It is also hard to hit the target if you never pull the trigger. Commit to accurate throws. Kuzushi, Tsukuri, and Kake.

Pankration MMA

Monday-Thursday

Strangle variations--Rear, side, front, and triangle.

Tuesday-Friday

Throws/takedowns--Judo and wrestling takedowns

Jiu-jitsu

Inside Dynamic MMA--July 9-13

I hope everyone had a great (and safe) Independence Day and Graffiti week.

Big congratulations to Ryan and Julie Cunningham on the birth of their daughter, Hannah, last week. Ryan will be gone Monday, but plans to return to teaching on Tuesday.

Congratulations to Maddie Patrick for winning 2nd place at the Revolution BJJ Tournament in Seattle over the weekend. I hope to see some video soon.

The weather is getting hot and is expected to get hotter. Please be sure to hydrate before practice and stay hydrated during practice. We will use the A/C as needed. We want to get a good sweat going, but we don't need anyone suffering from heat exhaustion.

Juji-gatame--This week in all adult classes, we will be working on set ups, counter attacks, and re-counters for straight arm locks.

See you in the dojo,

Sensei Larry Keith

Weekend update--June 17, 2012

Good news and bad news:

The good news is that Mike Frear successfully defended his 155 title by finishing his opponent in 38 seconds with a well timed arm-bar. Mike was also awarded "Knockout of the Year" by Northwest Fight Scene for his tornado kick in last year's UCS event at Spirit Mountain Casino.

The bad news is that both Cameron and Jessee fell short of victory in their fights.

Cameron was dominating his opponent early in the first round. He scored a couple of take-downs. In the last take-down, he stood up in his opponent's guard and leaned forward just a bit too much and got caught with a solid up kick that rocked him. The opponent jumped onto him and the referee stopped the fight due to unanswered blows.

Jessee also did very well in the early part of his fight. He rolled for a heel hook, switched to knee-bar and back to heel hook and ended up tangled up in turtle position underneath his opponent.  His opponent took advantage of the position and started securing the RNC. Jessee put the opponent's back to the floor and made the effort to escape, but it was too late.

I am very proud of the effort our fighters put into their fights and the training they endured to prepare. We know that our fighters were well trained, well conditioned, and well prepared.

However, the combative sports are a type of kinetic chess where we hope to make our moves as accurate as possible and capitalize on our opponent's mistakes. One small misjudgment can cost everything.

None of our fighters were injured and the OSAC gave them the required minimal suspensions. They will all be back in the dojo training on Monday.

Thank you, to our fighters and corners who conducted themselves in a professional manner and represented our dojo very well.

Thank you everyone that made the trip up to Salem to show your support for our DFCC fight team. We almost always fight on the opponents' home turf, so it is super helpful to have some people in the audience cheering for us. It does not go unnoticed and it is greatly appreciated.

Next week Dynamic MMA is working with the Boys and Girls Club for their summer camp. This will be our third year providing martial arts instruction as an option for the kids enrolled in the summer camp.

I will post a sign up sheet at the dojo for anyone that would like to help out.

Later in the month, we will be going to Camp Millennium to provide martial arts training there. I will be seeking volunteers for this program as well. All volunteers for Camp Millennium are required to fill out and turn in a background check permission form.
