...over the weekend

Sunday—

Youth Judo and BJJ student Madeline Patrick won first place on Saturday at the BJJ Revolution tournament held in Washington. Ryan told me that she dominated everyone in here division and even made her last opponent tap out from her mount. Congratulations Maddie on a job well done. Also, congratulations to Ryan for his outstanding coaching and for making the trip to support her.

Other NEWS—

Zuffa (UFC’s parent company) has purchased Strikeforce. Dana White says that nothing will change about how the businesses are run, but I think he means in the short term only.

For those of you that don’t know the history, UFC purchased Pride Fighting Championship from Dream Entertainment and dissolved the company. They later purchased WEC and have recently dissolved that brand absorbing its fighters and making lower weight classes in UFC.

Judging from the past dealings, it would be a safe bet that they intend to do the same with Strikeforce.

Nutrition

Normally, I post the fitness and nutrition blog on Wednesday. I apologize for the delay in getting this blog out. This week I spent my Wednesday on the road to Portland PDX and back.

So, let me get to this week's blog...

Last week I wrote about Coconut water as an excellent hydrating and electrolyte replacement beverage. This week I want to tell you about yet another superfood, this time in the form of a grain.
Quinoa—pronounced (keen-wah) is often referred to as “the supergrain”. It has been classified by the National Academy of Sciences as one of the best sources of protein in the vegetable kingdom.
This is a gluten free grain that is grown at 12,000 feet about sea level in South America. It has about twice the protein of other cereal grains, fewer carbohydrates, and even has some healthy fats.
It cooks up just like rice. Its nutty flavor is great as a hot breakfast cereal, or it can be a substitute for dinner rice dishes, such as rice pilaf.
Quinoa can be found next to the other grains in your supermarket. You can even find organic quinoa in the organic section if that is your preference.
This food is the answer for combat athletes looking for a high fiber, high protein, and low carbohydrate breakfast food. Be sure to add it to your superfoods list.

This week at Dynamic MMA--March 7

Judo--
Mon-Thurs--Escapes from pins
Tue-Fri--Seoi-nage variations/combos
MMA--
Mon-Thurs--Half guard controls, sweeps, and submissions
Tue-Fri--Takedowns to controlling positions
Jiu-jitsu--
Mon-Thurs--Attacking and defending the back
Tue-Fri--Kumikata in both standup and ground

I think a lot of Judo schools overlook pin escapes/reversals in their programs. I also believe that they generally overlook groundwork in favor of throws. At Dynamic MMA, we teach Kodokan Judo as a complete grappling art that makes use of all opportunities.

BJJ academies haven't spent enough time focusing on grip fighting as they should. Now, things are changing and BJJ schools are beginning to realize the paramount importance of gripping and grip breaking. We knew it all along! ;)

Mas Oyama once said, "one good throw is worth five good punches". This was coming from a man that killed bulls with his Karate reverse punch. Let it also be noted that he was good friends and training partner with Judo legend Kimura. Kimura was famous in Japan for giving concussions with his Osoto-gari.

What's happening this weekend...

Friday:
This weekend—
--FCFF Rumble at the Roseland 55 will take place at the Roseland Theatre in Portland. Former DFCC fight team member Jeremy Jones will be fighting for the 170 title. Good luck Jeremy! I hope you tear it up!
--Strikeforce Columbus: Dan Henderson vs Rafael Calvacante for the 205 title and Marloes Coenen will defend her 135 title vs Liz Carmouche.
You can watch the Strikeforce event on Showtime this Saturday at 7pm. I predict Henderson on this one and I also believe Coenen will successfully defend the women’s title.
--Bellator 35 at Tachi Palace: Kicking things off in the Welterweight quarterfinals will be Judo vs. Judo as “Judo” Jim Wallhead and former Judo Olympian Rick Hawn clash for a spot in the semifinals. This Judo matchup will either make for a barnburner or super boring fight. Either way, I’m tuning into it. There are some other good matches on the card for the quarterfinals.
My prediction for the finals is Rick Hawn and Jay Hieron. At the end, I hope to see Rick's hand being held up and the tournament champ. Go Judo!
Looks like Bellator did a deal with MTV2. The show will start on that channel at 6pm.
Also on MTV2 be sure to watch the “Female” Bully Beatdown episode at 5pm. I don’t know about anyone else…but I’ve been anxious to see this.
Later this month:
March 11th—Shark Fights 14 on HDNET
March 12th—Revolution BJJ tournament in Washington
March 26th—57th Annual Obukan Judo Shiai

nutrition

Super foods:
Often I get the question, “what is your choice for a rehydration beverage?” This question comes most frequently from (but is not limited to) combat athletes that have worked extra hard to make weight for a competition and need to rehydrate and replenish electrolytes.
Answer, “Coconut Water”.
Coconut water is not the same as coconut milk. Coconut milk is made from the juices pressed from the coconut meat, whereas coconut water is the semi-clear liquid in the center of the coconut.
Coconut water is a natural isotonic liquid that has similar levels of electrolytes as the human body. It was even used intravenously for emergency rehydration by British and Japanese soldiers during WWII.
Coconut water is low in acids, has zero fat, zero cholesterol, zero artificial sugars. It contains more potassium than a banana and only has about 25mg of sodium per cup.
Benefits—
Prevents dehydration and replenishes electrolytes lost during hard workouts.
Like other foods and beverages rich in potassium, coconut water may promote heart health and reduce the risk for hypertension and stroke.
It promotes kidney health due to its high levels of potassium and magnesium.
Coconut water also contains compounds that are reported to protect cells against aging and cancer.
Bottom line—there is no better natural beverage for rehydration and electrolyte replacement.
Coconut water is a good replacement for artificially flavored and colored sports drinks. Remember, dehydration is one of the most common causes for edema (water retention).  If you drink plenty of liquids, your body is less likely to shift into “survival mode” and store excess water.
My advice...drink plenty of water throughout the day and 8 oz of coconut water after hard workouts.
