December 28, 2013---Testing day success!

Great day at the dojo today! We tested 8 teen/adults and 12 kids for stripes today. All of them performed well and passed with flying colors.

Congratulations to Ryan Warner, Rand Dickson, Brian Powers, Mark Hamel, Brady Merrifield, Randy Dickson, Warren Dickson, and Reed Shanahan for earning a stripe on their white belts.

Congratulations to youth students, Gabe, Josh, and Malcolm for earning a white curriculum stripe on their belt and to May Lin, Tanner, Cameron, Cristian, Sean, Brayden, Elian, Ethan, and Emma for earning a bonus red attendance stripe on theirs.

Congratulations also to Josh, May Lin, Malcolm, and Cristian for being awarded "best attendance" patches. By the way...those are some cool looking patches!

The dedication and discipline of the students that tested today was displayed as they cruised through the exam smoothly and methodically.

Thank you to training partners, instructors, and family for helping with the success of these students. Together, we are building champions both inside and outside the dojo. Keep up the great work everyone!

Inside Dynamic MMA--Week of October 14-18

We are going into our third week at the new location. It seems that everyone is excited about the new building, new location, and new possibilities.

In the last two weeks, we have had great classes and even hosted two self defense seminars for local girl scouts.

On the 19th, we will host the girls scouts again to let them finish earning the "martial arts" badges and learn more about stranger danger/bully prevention.

Also on the 19th, we will host a Halloween Safety Seminar for all school aged kids. This event is open to the public, so if you know anyone with kids, tell them about the event.

On the 26th, we will host the Beaverton Impact Jiu-jitsu head coach, Armand Debruge for a Jiu-jitsu seminar. Armand is a highly decorated Jiu-jitsu competitor and has been a black belt since 2009. The seminar fee is $50 and will be from 10am-1pm. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from a highly qualified Jiu-jitsu instructor.

The remodel of the new dojo is going to go into overdrive beginning this week. Many of you have had a tour of the big room and loading dock area and see the vision of the future. Have patience with us during the work and remember how awesome it is going to be on completion.

Our dojo will be closed on Halloween as we host our annual Halloween Party and Haunted Dojo.

News: Week of August 26th-30th

  • The Dynamic MMA Summer Camp was a huge success! The kids got to make a martial arts movie. The theme we chose was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Below is the short movie we made. The kids performed very well and had great ideas. We did not get to showcase all of their skills in this video due to the short amount of time we had. However, we have some great ideas for the sequel that we will likely film over Christmas break.
  • I will be getting DVDs to the students that took part in the camp. Until then, please enjoy the Youtube version.

  • Back to school is right around the corner. We will be hosting a "Black Belt Focus for Better Grades" Seminar soon after school starts.  I will post the date as soon as it is set in stone. Also, it would be extremely helpful for anyone that has access to school registration or "meet the teacher day" to deliver some ad-cards for the event to parents and children at school.
  • We will be scheduling the BJJ stripe/belt testing day soon. More information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
  • Anyone registering for the Oregon Open Jiu-jitsu tournament should register as Impact/DFCC in the team affiliation section of the form. You must register before September 2nd. Registration can be done at this link Oregon Open

Inside Dynamic MMA--June 24-28

The summer camp at the Boys and Girls Club was awesome! Thank you to Tony, Ian, Mitchell, Cameron, Josh, and Malcolm for helping out. Also, thank you to Dean Jones and the Boys and Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley for letting us be part of their summer programs.

The Dynamic MMA Summer Camp is scheduled for the week of July 22-26 and the week of August 19-23. We've got some super cool stuff planned for the kids. Please be sure to RSVP if you plan to have your child attend.

Reminder: The dojo will be closed during the week of July 1-5 while Sensei Tony Pepe and I are in Las Vegas for the Martial Arts Supershow. Tony and I will be soaking up as much information as possible at the numerous seminars and bringing the information and skills back home to share with our dojo members.

Students: Please remember to pick up your attendance card on the way into class and give it to your instructor. Your attendance is an important part of the requirements to qualify for the rank exam at the end of the training cycle.

Our Spring Break Camp was awesome! Over 20 kids attended and had a blast. We can't wait until the Summer Camp in June.

We will be having a Dynamic MMA "Open House" on May 11th from noon until 4pm. We will have many fun activities for kids including a bouncy house. We are expecting a huge turnout for this event and need as many volunteers as possible to help out running the event. We will likely be serving food and drinks as well.  Please let us know asap if you wish to help out.

A big congratulations goes to Kyleah Murphy for her Subleague tournament Silver medal. Kyleah was bumped up to a higher rank division and had to face a 275lb opponent. She went to a draw for two matches and got caught in an Americana bent arm lock in the third match. The referee thought it looked good and called the match. The opponent Kyleah lost to had recently won 1st place at the Pan American BJJ Championships. We are very proud of Kyleah for being so tough. Great job Kyleah!

This week inside Dynamic MMA--March 18-22

We have had a great time with the kids from St Paul's Lutheran School, teaching P.E. to them the last two Thursdays. The kids will be with us again this Thursday. This week, we will teach stranger danger and bully prevention. At the end of the class, kids will get to break a board.

Next week is Spring Break. We will be offering a Spring Break Camp at the dojo during the week of March 25-29 for kids 6-17. Kids can use this time off school to improve their skills and have fun at the dojo. Watch for times and cost to be announced soon.

Sambo Week

"Sambo" is an acronym for SAMooborona Bez Oruzhiya--which is the Russian term for "defense without weapons". It is the hand to hand combat system developed in the early 1920s for the Soviet Red Army. It includes striking, throws, and submissions. It is probably most widely known for the leg-lock techniques employed.

This week for our adult classes will be "Sambo Week". Our MMA and BJJ classes will be going over many variations of leg locks. Nowhere else will you find the quality or variety of leg-lock tactics taught at Dynamic MMA.

Our adult Judo class will also cover how to incorporate Sambo style throws into their arsenal.

Kodokan Judo

Monday-Thursday

Illegal throws in Judo but legal in BJJ and Sambo.

Tuesday-Friday

Russian style groundwork and submissions.

Pankration Mixed Martial Arts

Monday-Thursday

Knee bars, knee bars, and more knee bars. The knee bar can be applied from many positions and in combination with other attacks.

Tuesday-Friday

Heel hooks. This is potentially a devastating submission. It is banned in amateur MMA here in Oregon as well as Jiu-jitsu tournaments. If officials, trainers, and students become more educated in this technique, it could prevent injuries and be allowed back into those competitions.

Jiu-jitsu

Monday-Thursday

Ankle lock entries and positional control.

Tuesday-Friday

Knee bars from a variety of positions.

Muay Thai/Kickboxing

Monday-Thursday

Rhythm drills with focus mitts. This is a great way to develop accuracy, speed, and timing your defense/offense combinations.

Tuesday-Friday

Closing the distance for the clinch or short range strikes. We love to work the clinch, we love to use elbows and knee strikes, but how do we get into that range. Here are some ways.

This week inside Dynamic MMA--March 4-8

Did you know that if you train in our Kodokan Judo progam that you are part of a very short line from the foundation of the art? Jigoro Kano was the founder of Kodokan Judo in 1882. His last surviving 10th dan student was Kyuzo Mifune (author of Canon of Judo), and 9th dan student was Kazuzo Kudo (author of Dynamic Judo). Mifune and Kudo were the main instructors at the Kodokan for Yuzo Kato. Yuzo Kato was the instructor for Alexenko, Larry Keith, Olga Keith, and Tony Pepe. Alexenko and Larry Keith both received their black belts from Yuzo Kato.

Kodokan Judo

Monday-Thursday

Bow and Arrow choke from several key positions. This is becoming a favorite in both our Judo and Jiu-jitsu programs.

Tuesday-Friday

Dynamic throws--We will work through some common contest throws that are too often practiced in a static situation. When applied with the use of momentum, these throws become even more awesome!

Dynamic Jiu-jitsu

Monday-Tuesday

Leg lasso spider guard sweeps and submissions. This is some fun stuff that even though it appears fancy, can actually be very practical.

Tuesday-Friday

Side control fundamental drills. These drills will help solidify your understanding and ability to make use of these positions.

Pankration Mixed Martial Arts

--Be prepared for tough workouts this week. Bring your gloves and mouthpiece to all the classes.

Monday-Thursday

Strikes and entering into takedowns

Tuesday-Friday

Guard passing specifically for MMA

Technique of the week

Technique of the week:

I have had a few people asking about solo training. I really encourage stability ball training. There are many things that can be done to help supplement your grappling game by using this tool. If you have questions and would like to learn some drills, ask any of our instructors. Here is a video of Jeff Glover demonstrating some advanced techniques.

The 24 Day Challenge using AdvoCare

I would like to invite all our members and friends to try the 24 day challenge. It is a great way to shed a few pounds, but it is not entirely about weight loss. It's also about overall well-being. As athletes, it is difficult to get adequate nutrition to support muscle preservation, joint support, and a strong immune system. AdvoCare makes products that I have personally seen great results from. The money spent on junk food that is killing us could easily be used to better our health using products such as these. If you would like to learn more about AdvoCare and/or the 24 Day Challenge, be sure to let Olga or myself know. --Larry Keith--

FYI for MMA fans:
Alan "The Talent" Belcher is a non-paid AdvoCare endorser:

What Alan uses: Post-Workout Recovery Sports Drink
AdvoCare Spark® Energy Drink
Nighttime Recovery
O2GOLD™ Advanced

What Alan says about AdvoCare products: "I feel that the AdvoCare products give me an edge over my opponents."

This week inside Dynamic MMA--January 21-25

Wow! What an exciting week this is going to be. We're going to be doing some hard work and have a lot of fun with some cool technical training.

Thank you to everyone that helped out with our Judo demo and Dynamic MMA booth at the Roseburg Valley Mall for the 2013 Health and Fitness Expo. The demos were great. It was fun having some mats in the middle of the mall for a day.

I don't have all the results yet, but it sounds like our team did well at the Ground Warrior tournament as well. I do know that Ian King won first place in his gi division by submitting all of his opponents and had a spectacular throw. Congratulations, Ian!

Here is what we are doing this week

Kodokan Judo

Monday-Thursday

Numerous escape options from Hon-kesa-gatame. After this week, there should be no reason any of our Judoka should get caught in this pin.

Tuesday-Friday

O-uchi-gari used to set up many other combination throws. There is a reason we have had everyone learning ko-uchi and o-uchi. Not only are they great throws, they are a great tool to get a reaction from the opponent to set up follow up attacks.

Mixed Martial Arts

Monday-Thursday

RWT (Russian Wrestling Techniques)--Takedowns using underhook and wrist control. We are also going to practice getting the underhook from the Russian 2 on 1 arm tie.

Tuesday-Friday

RWT (Russian Wrestling Techniques)--We will be returning to the Russian 2 on 1 arm tie series. I love this grip and use a version of it with gi grappling as well. It gives the thrower a great positional advantage. Learn it!

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

Monday-Thursday

We will work a handful of defenses vs the standard side mount and preventing the full mount. These techniques work very well. You can prevent points from being scored and put your self in better position for sweeps/submissions.

Tuesday-Friday

Submissions from bottom guard. These subs are not too fancy but have high success. We'll be practicing a few ways to set up armlocks and triangles.

Muay Thai Kickboxing

Monday-Thursday

Good workouts planned this week. We will be going over using thrust kicks in combinations and counter kick strategies.

Tuesday-Friday

Working for dominant clinch position is of paramount importance in Muay Thai. We will go over and drill many variations of gaining or regaining control.

--I think this sounds like a very fun week at the dojo. We have fighters training to fight on February 23rd in Salem. We will be putting them through a very tough training camp.

I hope everyone has a great week. See you in the dojo!

This week inside Dynamic MMA--Jan 14-18

Dynamic MMA celebrates the 10 year anniversary of the opening of our dojo. Our anniversary potluck on Sunday was packed. It was very nice to have a chance to visit with everyone while enjoying the fine cuisine prepared by dojo members. Once again I have to say that not only to we have fine martial artists in our dojo, but also fine culinary artists as well.

I wish to thank all that have supported the growth of the dojo over this past decade. It has been a great pleasure to watch our students learn and grow together. Some students that are with us now, have been with us since the beginning and still others are just getting started. We cherish each of our dojo family members.

We plan to continue growing our dojo. We are constantly seeking ways to improve our programs and the education our students receive.  Here are some of our plans already in the works for 2013.

--Developing a solid system for our kids' classes to include more anti-bullying education
--Educate kids and parents on stranger danger and risk awareness
--More self defense workshops for teens and adults
--Hosting more dojo family friendly gatherings (potlucks, picnics, etc.)
--....and much, much more.

We hope that you all continue to train with us and help the dojo grow to new heights. Take great pride in your dojo. We have all come a long way together and together we will continue to do great things.

This week inside Dynamic MMA--New Year 2013

News:

Happy New Year to everyone. We hope everyone has had a pleasant and safe holiday season.

Congratulations to our Tony Pepe, Anthony Filan, and Wesley Murphy for receiving their Kodokan Judo rank of Shodan. The test lasted five hours. They were all on task and looked great, executing techniques with expert skill. We will post video highlights as soon as editing is done.

Our annual potluck for senior Judoka members was fantastic. We got to experience some of the fine cooking of our brown and black belts (and spouse's). We got to discuss the past year as well as plans for the coming 2013 year. We see lots of good changes and growth for the dojo.

We also want to welcome Tony Pepe as our new instructor for the kids' Judo programs. Tony has been practicing Judo since he was a kid and originally trained under Yuzo Kato at UCC. He has been with Dynamic MMA for several years and has developed a great level of communication with the students and parents. He is also one of the most patient instructors at the dojo.

This month, our dojo celebrates it's 10 year anniversary. It has been a long journey with many ups and downs. We will continue to seek out ways to improve our programs and continue the growth of our dojo. Thank you to all that have passed through our doors and a special thank you to all that have persevered to stay with us. You are all very special people that make it a pleasure to teach and share.

This week inside the dojo:

Wednesday is Randori and Sparring day for adult classes every week. If you are a member of one of our basic programs and would like to try out one of the Wednesday classes, ask Sensei Larry Keith or Sensei Olga Keith for more information.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

Thursday-Friday

We will go over some basic defenses/escapes from bottom side mount position.
